Screening of European Phaseolus cultivars with the focus on P. coccineus as the basis for the genetic improvement of the "Steirische Käferbohne" (Styrian scarles runner bean) in heat tolerance and yield stability

In the recent decades the traditional cultivation on rod cultures in home gardens was developed to agricultural rear cultures and intercropping with maize. The dry beans are used traditionally for salads, soups and other dishes. An application for the registration as protected designation of origin (PDO) was submitted in 2014. As there is only limited information available on genetic variation in key traits affecting yield stability, the present research aimed at screening of genebank accession for variation in heat tolerance and other important agronomic characters of climbing scarlet runner bean cultivars.We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Provincial Chamber of Agriculture of Styria.Peer reviewe
